Day 22 (May 31) Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon – 12 miles
I was joyous to arrive in Leon, a beautiful cathedral city, this afternoon. I cannot wait to do the full tour tomorrow, my day off.
The highlight of the walk here was a darling burro cart. A pilgrim had harnessed his little donkey to a small pod on wheels. Through the windows of the cart I could see bedding and clothes. The man was walking behind the cart, while his cheerful dog was leading the way. He had a brilliant all-in-one solution to two common Camino problems…a way to get your stuff toted and to avoid sleeping in crowded albergues. What a charming sight. We passed by a number of beautiful old bridges that were hundreds of yards from the rivers they were built to cross, evidence of diversion by man or nature over the centuries. 
Three of us had a bang up Spanish style lunch that featured leeks with mustard sauce as the first course. The best thing I’ve eaten in weeks and such a contrast to yesterday’s meager provisions. 
Deciding to spend an extra in Leon means separating from my walking crew. That is a tough decision, but it is important that I do not rush through this trek, that I take time to explore the history and experience the character of the people. It is also time to refocus on my inner journey, something that has been hard to do in a group. It is so pleasant to chat along the way that deep thoughts stay hidden.
I will miss my friends, but hope to meet up with them again on the trail or in Santiago, my final destination.
Yes, I imagine it would be difficult to do deep reflection when in the company of others. Nice if you can achieve a fine balance! Wish you had a picture of the donkey cart!
