Day 19 ( May 28) Carrion de los Condes to Teradillos de los Templarios (16.7 Miles)

Today I crossed the halfway mark. From my current location, Terradillos de Los Templarios, 260 miles down, 240 to go. We definitely did the HAPPY DANCE.http://trishdeford.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/img_1080.mov

When I began this trek, it was hard to imagine that simply putting one foot in front of the other would result in my accomplishing so much. It proves that any effort can be the start of something big.

I think I am physically stronger than when I began. Though my feet hurt, the pain is not severe. I don’t have the extreme exhaustion at the end of each day that I had at the beginning. Feeling pretty good overall.

I had a nice day walking on the trail. We ran across many adobe buildings, which looked quite old. Not sure how they hold up in the rain, but they do. Here’s my pal Mickey showing her adobe enthusiasm.

There were some important guideposts along the way.

Tonight I am staying in an Albergue that we joke looks like the cult compound at Waco TX. A bizarre, large, newish block building in the middle of a field, surrounded by a high fence.

I’m in a “quad” room with three walking pals. It is considered quite an upgrade from the common room. Looks kind of like cell block 6 at Rikers Island. So much for Old World charm in rural Spain.

Despite austere accommodations, I am happy to have a bed at the end of the day and a hot shower. I have just learned that the host will do the laundry for the 4 of us for 10 Euros. This just keeps getting better!

This trip has made me appreciate everything. I’ve learned to live with 2 sets of clothes. One to wear, one to wash. I’ve been using the same mini tube of toothpaste the whole time. Shampoo? Who needs clean hair? We have so much and really need so little. Tonight’s dinner, thin pork cutlets with garlic and parsley. Divine. The ice cream came in a package and I ate every bite.

I was guesstimating over 200 last night, and waiting for this mileage announcement! Hooray for you, your strength and your revelations along the way. Wishing you much dry air and dry terrain in Part II, but no need; you’ve proven unfazed by all elements on the journey.

I’m following you every step of the way. And, although I will never walk a mile in your shoes, I find myself standing taller in my own. I wish my girls were old enough to understand your journey. The strength and grace with which you carry your burden would serve them well. You are an inspiration.
