Day 6: Uterga to Lorca (12 miles)
(Due to poor WiFi connections this blog post was delayed by a day.)
Today’s walk took us through the first almond and olive groves and vineyards we have seen. The path was lined with wild flowers.
It was mostly a dirt path, though at one point we were walking along a cobbled Roman road, only to turn the corner and find ourselves behind a steel guardrail waking next to the highway. There seems to be little regard for chronology here, rather, there is a continuing jumble of centuries.
One of the major sites along the Camino today was the town of Puente la Reina, a historic town with a famous namesake bridge, dating to the 11th century. The queen had it built for the use of the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago and it is still in use today, with no signs of wear and tear.
I had my first stork sighting. Just as we entered Puente de la Reina, I looked up at the cupola on the church, and there it was my stork. I had heard that they were seen all along the Camino, and ta-dah, there it was.
As usual, I found a cute guy along the trail.
Day 6th scenery is breathtaking! Slow down girl…18 miles is a lot so early in the game! Day 7 nearly did you in…..
Hope John is keeping up, it can’t be easy to walk at the same pace for any length of time . So Proud of you both!
