Day 2: May 11, 2018

Orisson to Roncesvalles (14 miles)

Morning broke with a pink sunrise, announcing a beautiful, sunny day ahead. The fog in the valleys was mystical.

We set off just after our “breakfast of champions” — bread and coffee. Here are today’s walking stats:

14 miles/ at least half in excess of 30% grades/ wind gusts up to 35 mph.

I expected long days, steep inclines and occasional rain and mud, but I had forgotten about the additional challenge of high winds. Faced with those, each step was a labor. At times, I had to brace myself with my sticks to keep from being blown off the trail.

.

Despite the difficulties, we were rewarded by such spectacular scenery that both of us said there was no place in the world we’d rather be.

The descent into Roncesvalles, a monastery village and our home for the night, was sharp and slippery. We checked into our hotel–a regular double room with our own bath. No bunk beds or roommates for us tonight. Looking forward to a sound sleep. (Hmm…wonder when the church bells shut down for the night.)

My mother cried when I read your introductory email to her. You will have Ellie’s support as well. We are eagerly awaiting your further reports.
